That check-engine light: 5 things it usually means

A check-engine light isn’t a reason to panic, but it’s not something to ignore for six months either. It just means the computer saw something it didn’t like. Here are the five we see most — and how worried you should be about each.

1. A loose or bad gas cap

Sounds too simple, but it’s one of the most common. The cap seals your fuel system; if it’s loose, cracked, or worn out, the computer notices and flags it. Tighten it until it clicks. If the light goes off after a day or two of driving, that was it.

2. A failing oxygen (O2) sensor

This sensor tells your engine how much fuel to burn. When it gets lazy, you lose fuel economy and your emissions climb. The car still runs, but it’s costing you at the pump — and left alone it can damage your catalytic converter, which is the expensive part. Worth getting looked at soon.

3. Spark plugs or ignition coils

Worn plugs or a bad coil cause misfires — that stumble or rough idle you feel. If the light is flashing, that’s an active misfire dumping raw fuel into your exhaust, and that can ruin a catalytic converter fast. Flashing light means don’t keep driving it — get it in.

4. The catalytic converter

If the converter itself is failing, you’ll usually see worse fuel economy and sluggish power. This is the pricey one — and it’s often the result of ignoring one of the cheaper problems above for too long. Another good reason not to let the light just ride.

5. Mass airflow sensor

This one measures the air coming into the engine. When it’s dirty or failing you get rough running, stalling, and bad mileage. Often it’s just a cleaning or a straightforward part to swap.

Steady light vs. flashing light

Here’s the rule of thumb: a steady light usually means “get it checked soon, but you’re probably okay to drive.” A flashing light means “something is actively going wrong — stop driving hard and get it in.” When in doubt, call us.
